MGA NINE-HOLERS
The Men’s 9-Hole group has been formed within the MGA to provide an organized golfing experience that promotes interest and confidence in playing golf while familiarizing players with the rules, etiquette and play at Ford’s Colony Country Club. The 9-holers provide an opportunity for regular play for those who wish to play 9 holes in a friendly and enjoyable time frame, with lunch frequently following in one of the Country Club restaurants. Any MGA member can sign up to play with the MGA 9-holers anytime during the year, enabling working on golf skills in a less competitive environment. Conversely, 9-Holers may play in any 18-Hole event, subject to their handicap requirements, simply by signing up in the 18-hole book. There is no handicap requirement for play with the 9-holers (except to qualify for tournament prizes), so it provides a great way to establish a handicap for play in MGA and other Country Club competitions.
Currently, there are approximately 70 MGA members who primarily play with the MGA 9-holers on a regular basis. Organized play is on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the year. During the April through October golfing season, the MGA 9 group usually follows the MGA 18 group with tee times on Mondays and Fridays, and has a shotgun start on Thursdays; the LGA 9 group usually plays on the other half of the course on Thursday. Players should sign up prior to noon of the day before play in the MGA 9-hole book in the computer room. The Pro Shop Member’s Information Line (258-4133) should be checked after 5:00 p.m. for starting times and course information.
Tournaments are generally held on the third Thursday of each month from April through October. These are competitive events using different formats organized by a tournament director. A nominal fee is charged and prizes are awarded. A group lunch is usually held in one of the club restaurants after play, and in this case it is necessary to sign up by noon on Tuesday in order to provide a head count to the restaurant. In October, the monthly tournament is for the 9-hole championship and requires participants to play several rounds.
In addition to the above tournaments Monthly 9/18 Tournaments, May Monday Madness, and a September Match Play Tournament are held with cash and golf ball prizes. The 9-holers run an Army/Navy Tournament for all members of the MGA in July and a LGA/MGA 9-hole groups host the Guys and Dolls Tournament in August.
Handicaps are required for all tournament play that rewards with prizes.
